School of Medicine Celebrates 12 New Scholarships - Thanks to Walter and Anne Gamble

“I am very proud that so many Gamble Scholars have chosen careers in public health, family medicine, and research because debt was no longer a factor,” said Dr. Gamble. “It is our hope that these new scholarships will continue that great trend, as well as inspire others to give to scholarship support.”

During the 20 years they have contributed to student financial aid at Penn Medicine, the Gambles have developed close relationships with many Gamble Scholars. The scholarships have even acted as "matchmaker," with some graduates marrying and starting families of their own.

"We've gotten lots of letters, e-mails, invitations to weddings, baby pictures," said Mrs. Gamble. "We feel so blessed, it's enriched our lives. It's overwhelming."

During Medical Alumni Weekend, the Gambles were honored for their extraordinary philanthropy, and celebrated with the many Gamble Scholars who came to Philadelphia to join them. Presenting the couple with a token of Penn Medicine's appreciation — a commemorative print of the John Morgan Building — Dean Rubenstein remarked, "It is thanks to the Gambles, and the donors they have inspired, that Penn Medicine is well positioned to continue attracting the most promising young minds.

"Walter and Anne have given our talented students the freedom to make a true impact on medicine, and beyond that, they have made them feel like a special part of the Penn Medicine family."
